The menstrual cycle can be compared to a symphony, where the endocrine system plays the main role, as the conductor, and the hypothalamus, pituitary gland and gonads, as musicians. These organs and glands interact through a complex hormonal regulatory system called the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis to control the menstrual cycle.
Neurons in the hypothalamus secrete gonadotropin-releasing hormone and a peptide that acts on pituitary cells. This results in two hormones, FSH and LH, being released into the bloodstream in both men and women. In women, these hormones act on the ovaries to stimulate ovulation and promote the release of estrogen and progesterone, which control the menstrual cycle.
Although the menstrual cycle can be complicated, it is important for a woman’s health. By understanding cycle physiology and hormonal regulation, women will be able to better understand their bodies and take control of their reproductive health.
